Divya Desham Temples of Lord Vishnu
Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu
Lord MahaVishnu or Narayana is so touched by the poems of his
devout devotees. Divine Tamil poet saints called ‘Azhwars’ lived their
whole lives immersed in meditation of God and espoused emotional
service to Lord Vishnu in their famous songs or hymns full of longing,
ecstasy and service. These poems help revive Bhakti in Kali Yuga.
The temples where Azhwars sang the elixir of ‘Mangalaa Shasanam’
and mentioned in their works/poems are considered Divya Desams.
The word ‘Divya’ means ‘Premium/Elite’ and the word ‘Desam’
indicates ‘land/place’. Visiting these elite temples is believed to
awaken the spiritual consciousness, dormant in many of us and ignite
Bhakti in the hearts of the pilgrims.
These holy temples are spread through Tamil Nadu (85), Kerala (11),
Uttar Pradesh (4), Uttarakhand (3), Andhra Pradesh (2) and Gujarat
(1), and Country of Nepal(1) – Muktinath. The last 2 Divya Desams are
outside the realms of earth.
Some of the most well-known Divya Desams are:
- Badrinath Temple (Badrinath, Uttarakhand)
- Tirumala Venkateshwara Temple (Tirupathi, Andhra Pradesh)
- Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, Srirangam (Near Trichy,
Tamilnadu) - Dwarakadheesh Temple (Dwaraka, Gujarat)
- Kesava Deo Temple (Mathura, Uttar Pradesh)
- Parthasarathy Temple, Triplicane (Chennai, Tamilnadu)
Pilgrimages or Tirtha Yatra are considered an integral part of
Hinduism. Divya Desams is filled with mythological significance to
Hindus and are held at high esteem by ardent devotees, who establish
and strengthen deity worship as an important limb of Bhakti.
Temples are places where you can realize God and develop love
toward Him. The vibrations in the temple allow us to glimpse at the
Eternal Truth, in this impermanent world. He shows the importance of
spiritual knowledge despite our attachment to material wealth. Visit
Divya Desams and open the door of inquisitiveness to spiritual
knowledge!
